Food Font is an art project where people can make alphabets out of food, take pictures of each letter, and later use these and other food alphabets to create images and other creative projects. The project supports dialogue and builds community around food, health, and sustainability.
The Food Font project allows you to participate by making and using alphabets to:
- Make creative images and projects on the computer
- Use the free alphabet printables for craft and game activities
- Make your own food alphabet that you submit to the project.
If you want to organize your own Food Font event in your community, school, business, or market there are event resources to get you started.
Why not play and write with your food?
History of the Project
Food Font is a project started by interdisciplinary artist Kristen Baumlier. Prior to developing Food Font, Baumlier was creating and photographing words made out of food. Food Font was born when she realized that this activity could could become a community project to promote discussion and build community around food in a unique way.
Since 2012, a number of Food Font events were held at various public events and at farmers markets, in order to get the word out about the project. Over 1200 letters were created.
The vision for Food Font is that it will encourage discussion about food and food issues. Participants of Food Font so far include visitors to Farmer’s markets, gardeners from community gardens, teachers, students and people who love food. It is a fun, creative activity that anyone can do of any age, and in any size group.
